Our Story

Samantha Johnson
MS, CCC-SLP
Samantha is the owner and founder of In Other Words, LLC. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences and a Master of Science degree at Grand Valley State University in Speech-Language Pathology. She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and a Minnesota state Speech-Language Pathology professional license.
Samantha has experience working with both pediatric and adult populations in various settings – acute rehab clinics, outpatient clinics, schools, and in-home. She has had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from some incredible occupational therapists, physical therapists, developmental optometrists, audiologists, and orofacial myologists, collaborating on treatment plans for our mutual clients. She understands the importance of connecting with other specialty areas to further support a child so they can reach their full potential, and knows it often takes a village to make that happen.
Samantha believes providing speech-language therapy services in a child’s home allows for more personalized therapy sessions that effectively address each child’s unique needs, rather than adhering to rigid insurance restrictions that often impose unrealistic limitations on services. Her sessions are play-based and child-led, meaning a child is not “forced” to sit at a table to look at pictures for 45 minutes. Scientists have discovered that it can take up to 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain, whereas it takes far less to do so in play – as little as 10-20 repetitions! Addressing speech and language goals in play promotes intrinsic motivation for the child and facilitates engagement, learning, and overall progress towards developmental milestones. Samantha encourages parent/caregiver involvement during our sessions, as well, and provide helpful tools so you feel confident in supporting your child’s learning outside of appointment times.
When she’s not working, you can find Samantha enjoying time outside with her husband and their rescue dog, Sully, camping, traveling, playing pickleball, or reading a good book.
